Mandarin - Chinese Opera

Dear Room 4,

We have been learning one of the Asian language Mandarin since the beginning of the term and this week we were learning about the Chinese Opera and the masks. The history of Chinese Opera was much longer than the history of New Zealand and there is a wide range of masks and costumes that Chinese people use for telling stories on the stage.

Many colours are used in any given Chinese opera masks, but the dominant colours indicate the specific characteristics. Here is the question for you all regarding the masks: what do these colours indicate: Red, blue, yellow and black?

Good luck!
Lily

The red on the mask tells us the character has devotion, courage and bravery, honesty and loyalty.

The blue on the mask tells us that the character is loyal, is savage and or violent and cleaver/ cunning.

The Yellow colour on the ask means the character is savage, wild, violent, eager, try to achieve something and cool-headedness.

The colour Black symbolizes roughness and savage and violence’s. The black face means the character is either a rough and bold character or a not fair and selfless personality.
